Welcome to the website of Chenies Village HIstory Group (CVHG), a community co-operative group with a focus on preserving Chenies history, documenting the history of our village, sharing the stories of its people and properties, and fostering community engagement. Many residents, their parents and grand-parents have lived here for decades; we seek to record their histories and memories of past lives in the village before they are lost forever.
Chenies village lies in the very south-eastern corner of Buckinghamshire, near the border with Hertfordshire, England, and dates back to even before it was named Chenies, the earliest records being of an Isenhampstead, a Saxon name first mentioned in 1165. You can find out more about it’s earliest origins, and it’s renaming by the Cheyne family on our Village Timeline page.
We have also been working hard to add content to the various places around the village, past and present, and you can discover more about the Almshouses, Dodd’s Mill, the Bedford Chapel, the Cricket Club, Chenies Village School, Liberty Tomb, St Michael’s and the Watercress Beds, with more to come.
As we begin to build our site you will be able to discover even more exciting stories of the people who lived here as well as the history of the village itself. In addition you will find many original documents referenced throughout the site that you can view and download.
If you are or your ancestors lived in the village or you have stories to tell about life here, we would love to hear from you. You can contact us by emailing chenieshistory@yahoo.com
