Land Tax was an annual payment based on a valuation made under tax legislation of 1692. In 1798 the Land Tax Redemption Acts allowed landowners to make this land tax perpetual and permanently exempt their property from it by paying a lump sum equivalent to 15 years worth of tax. This helped the Government raise immediate funds for the French Revolutionary wars and acted like a census by listing the names of owners and occupiers of land.
